Never Take Trash Home Again
Waste is an unavoidable by-product of life
in general and of course life on the Playa. Burning Man is the largest
festival type gathering on BLM Land in the United States. These and other
agencies conduct spot inspections to the effectiveness of the overall Leave
No Trace ethos, one of the Burning Man Project's credo's.
MOOP Be Gone
manages the safe and sanitary storage, collection,
transportation, and disposal of solid and liquid waste in Northern Nevada. The company is
also responsible for the design, development, implementation, and promotion of
recycling, waste reduction, and waste diversion programs for the Burning Man
Festival, which takes place at the end of August each year in the Black Rock
Desert, North of Gerlach, Nevada
But Where Does the Trash Go?
MOOP Be Gone knows Trash and what to do with it. Weather you use our Theme
Camp Pickup service or you drop-off your trash on your way Off-Playa at our
Waste Disposal Center, the
trash makes its way to a "materials recovery facility (MRF)" to be sorted.
MRF's sort out the reusable and recyclable materials. The things that can be used again are then taken to recycling
facilities. Just imagine, the plastic water bottle that you accidentally threw
into the trash can will be melted down and remade into something else. Will it
be a plastic bag, another water bottle, art?
The rest of the trash is transported to a landfill. A landfill is not a simple hole in the ground to
dump waste! A landfill is usually
lined on the bottom and sides with plastic or clay to prevent water and trash
from leaking into the ground, much the same way the pool is lined with concrete
to prevent the water from going into the ground. The trash is poured into the
landfill and covered by a layer of soil so that the trash doesn’t fly away, get
wet, or get into the surrounding area to affect wildlife. Each day’s layer of
trash and soil is a "cell" of trash that gets stacked on top of one another like
a row of dominoes. They repeat this process until the landfill is full.
You know the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle. Waste
reduction, which is making less garbage in the first place, is the preferred
option of MOOP Be Gone. Reduction is followed by reuse, which means
repairing items, donating them to a charity or selling them. Reuse is followed
by recycling and composting – both of which turn materials that would become
waste into valuable new resources. MOOP Be Gone works with
Burners Without
Borders in their efforts to Re-use Lumber & other building materials thrown
away at Burning Man for humanitarian projects all over the United States.
"MOOP Be Gone has a strong commitment to it's customers and the Burning Man
Community, as well as greater Northern Nevada, and an
excellent track record in protecting and enhancing the environment", says ScottoBobScotto, CEO
